Benjamin Mendez

Benjamin Mendez 68, of Newark, NJ passed away on Monday, September 16, 2019 at home. He was born in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico.

Benny was a devoted partner to Alejandrina Rosa; loving father of Benjamin Mendez Jr. and his wife JoAnna, and stepdaughters Carmen, Milligro, Christie, Alexandria and Veronica, cherished grandfather of Elizabeth and Benjamin; step grandfather to Jose, Abby, Gilbert, Cathy, Destiny, A.J., Damien, Lizzie, Andre, Julian and Elena; and brother of Estelle Mendez, Domingo Mendez, Elba Lugo and George Mendez. He was predeceased by his father Jovino Mendez and his mother Marcela Perez, sister Carmen and brother Arcides Mendez. He is also survived by his former wife and friend Rosa Mendez. 

Benny possessed a sunny disposition; he was rarely without a smile on his face. He enjoyed bowling, pool, softball, dominos, horseracing, Atlantic City and playing the lottery. Encouraged by Alenjandrina’s free spirit, he discovered later in life a love oftraveling, camping and eating out. But most of all, he loved his family. He was known as a genuinely nice person, with a generous heart and a kind spirit and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. 

Visitation will be held 5 pm-9pm on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 and on Thursday, September 19, from 10-11 am. Following visitation on Thursday, a funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel,  at 11:30am, with interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ.
