Maria Sofia Caban, 79, of Newark, NJ passed away on September 2, 2021.
Born to parents Juan Caban and Cosma Vargas, on March 25, 1942 in Moca, Puerto Rico, she was one of six children. She is survived by her sisters Miriam and Consuelo. She is predeceased by her brother Juan and sister Iris.
As a young woman she married Miguel Velez, who passed away in 2007. Together they are predeceased by their son Geraldo and survived by their children Sonia Manbodh, Dinorah Velez, Celso Velez and his wife Elsa, Miriam Velez, and Felix “Danny” Velez and his wife Lana.
Although she hailed proudly from La Isla del Encanto, she quickly and lovingly embraced her new home in Newark, NJ when she moved there in the 1970’s and was always an active member of her parish and community.
“Sofia” or “Sofie” as she was often called by loved ones will be remembered as a strong, beautiful, and caring matriarch whose legacy will live on through the host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren that carry her spirit and faith.
Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at St. Lucy’s Church in Newark.
